About McLoughlin Middle School

Motto

Every Panther Every Time

Welcome to McLoughlin Middle School, a place deeply rooted in the rich history of the Pacific Northwest. Our institution proudly bears the name of John McLoughlin (1784-1857), a remarkable figure in the region's formative years. John McLoughlin's legacy as the chief agent of the Columbia Fur District of the Hudson’s Bay Company at Fort Vancouver earned him the title "Father of Oregon." He played a pivotal role in assisting the American cause in Oregon Country during a time when it was occupied by both Britain and the United States. His general store in Oregon City became the famous last stop on the Oregon Trail.

History

Originally known as Pasco Junior High, our school underwent a transformation when the new Stevens Junior High opened its doors in approximately 1963, leading to our current identity as McLoughlin Middle School. The previous McLoughlin school building has a storied history, serving as Pasco City Hall and Pasco High before its present role.

Former school board vice president Bill Leggett, a dedicated educator, once served as a principal at McLoughlin Middle School and played a pivotal role in opening the new school in 1982. His commitment to the school's growth and development has left an indelible mark.

Embracing Our Legacy

Just as John McLoughlin left an indelible mark on the Pacific Northwest, McLoughlin Middle School is a notable institution in Pasco. Each year, we welcome over 700 visitors to our school's Vision of Hope Museum. This immersive experience allows students and guests to delve into history, exploring the past through a unique lens. Our 8th-grade students engage with history by reading and studying the Diary of Anne Frank in their language arts classes. Subsequently, they channel their energies into projects inspired by that time period, resulting in a captivating collection of models, quilts, slideshow presentations, and other creations showcased for our visitors.

Preparing for the Future

At McLoughlin Middle School, we are committed to providing a well-rounded education that prepares our students for success at the middle school, high school, and college levels. Our AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination) equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel academically and beyond. We are proud to be home to an award-winning MESA team (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement), showcasing our commitment to STEM education.

In addition to these programs, we are excited to offer the district's Two-Way Dual Language middle school program, where students become bilingual and biliterate in both Spanish and English. This program reflects our dedication to fostering diversity and cultural awareness.

Furthermore, McLoughlin Middle School has recently implemented the Character Strong program, emphasizing the importance of character education and the development of social-emotional skills in our students. We believe that a strong character is the foundation of success in all aspects of life.
